FINALLY THE BALCONY IS ALIVE! …MY ADVICE TO MAKE IT LIVABLE
IT’S ALL THE FAULT OF COVID-19!
For just over a month, unexpectedly forced at home, each of us had to face changes. We cannot yet say which are only transitory and which will last for a long time, but we can certainly say that we have been put to the test by an invisible enemy who has destabilized our balance. And now, according to a rather natural mechanism, we’re trying to redesign a new one, adapting to the happened circumstances.
The houses have found a lost haunting and everyone is trying to build daily relationships with spaces and objects, as best they can. Between a self-certification and the other we cleaned every corner of the house, we kneaded bread, pizza, biscuits and cakes, until to make flour and yeast precious and extremely rare, we read books and magazines, did online courses and video calls, we watched movies and trained in front of the TV, but after a while the idea of going out became obsessive. And here many prisoners in the house, have sought a way out. Blessed is he who has a garden! … Of course, you can also settle for a terrace! … But after all, even a balcony is fine!
THE BALCONY HAS COME BACK TO LIFE
The balcony, that architectural element projected towards the urban space, which now represents the only outlet to the world and that in recent decades had only filled with cupboards, garbage cans and air conditioners, has finally come back to life! And it’s nice to see him like that.
Often underestimated or taken for granted, in recent weeks it has revived and is becoming one of the most important spaces in the house. So important that it could be the starting point of some possible future new trends in the real estate market. Probably from now on, many of those willing to buy or rent a house will orient their choices towards cuts a bit larger and strictly with outdoor spaces.
We saw on the web the balcony starring thousands of videos of fanciful Italians who discovered themselves as cabaret players and put on hilarious shows. On the balcony we sang the hymn of Mameli, we made an appointment for an aperitif simulating a disco, and we simply applauded in honor of those who are deployed at the front to fight the enemy.
To my surprise, then, I discovered that the balcony is now also the place where you make new friends. But how cynical were we before masks and gloves became an integral part of our daily equipment? We had never exchanged a chat with the tenant of the apartment next door! Where was over our essence of social animal?
USEFUL TIPS FOR DECORATING THE BALCONY
You just need a few ideas and small tricks to make it comfortable and livable. Although small in size, furnishing it in the right way, can become the place to take refuge for a well-deserved relaxation or spend some free time, live the sunsets or summer evenings, have an outdoor meal and welcome friends. There are many solutions, even low cost.
The first step is definitely to use plants to try to recreate a natural environment with the appearance of a small home garden. Choosing to grow vegetables and especially herbs, in fact, is an easy and economical idea to realize that allows you to beautify the balcony as well as enjoy organic products at true zero km.
If you do not have a large green thumb, you can always opt for artificial green and aim to furnish the balcony with sofas as if it were a living room, insert a table and chairs to turn it into an outdoor dining room, change the lighting, the color of the walls, insert pillows and carpets. It is good to choose weather resistant materials.
It’s always a good idea to leave free to the imagination and give space to colors, especially if you consider that you are talking about a place to live mainly in spring and summer.
If the space available is really small, the market offers many smart solutions that give at least the opportunity to have a quick meal on the balcony.
And if you are not lucky enough to have a beautiful view, you can always turn the seats towards the inside!
WE WILL BE BETTER PEOPLE!
I don’t know if, once the emergency is over, the beauty of the animated balconies will continue to be so, but at least after making friends with the neighbors, I’m sure we’ll be better people. I want to believe it.
